I just got the word that I landed the latest cover of Transworld Surf Magazine. Nate Yeomans and I have been spending a bit of time working down at Blacks beach this winter and, to our delight, it has all paid off. The day this image was shot Nate and I were connecting quite a bit in the water but this image really stood out to me. Photo Editor at TWS, Aaron Checkwood, did an amazing job on the color as well as keeping it all under wraps until the mag went to print. He sent Nate and I an email a few days ago and totally surprised us. Here is Nate's response to the email.

"Psyching dude!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. Its 8.30 am over here in OZ an Im going to crack open a tooheys new with the G boys and celebrate. Send over a scan when you get a chance. Dude Im freaking amping. Yeah mate yeah. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! n8"

This months issue of San Diego Magazine features a story written by Adam Elder about the issues of localism amongst surfers in San Diego. I was contracted by San Diego Magazine to shoot the supporting portraits and other imagery for the article. Among those photographed for the feature were longtime Sunset Cliff local Nate Cintas, USD professor Jerome Hall and San Diego legendary shaper Skip Frye. Windanwomp: This image was taken on a small high tide evening at Windansea Beach in La Jolla, California.

Soulset: I shot this image on film back in 2004. It was just one of those amazing Southern California days and a friend had loaned me a board to sit on while I shot photos. This was one of the last photos on the roll. I flipped the borrowed board over and pushed it between me and the setting sun seconds before shooting this image.

Windansea Palette: Also captured at Windansea Beach during one of many amazing sunsets experienced here over the course of my time living in La Jolla.

Wiki Wiki: I shot this image of Diamond Head during a trip to Hawaii a couple years ago. With the help of some heavy filtration I was able to expose this image long enough to create a painted effect in the water.

The Peak: There are two things I like about this image of Black's Beach. For one, you can really see how this wave is coming out of La Jolla Cove's deep water canyon allowing for it's unbridled ascent onto the sandbar. The second thing is the peculiar lack of surfers out this day. The latter of the two being much more uncommon.

The Grom: I was just playing around with motion this evening as surfers were paddling out. This image showed a great deal of life in it when I took a closer look. It really reminds me how carefree and fun life is when you're young.

The Dragon: This image was taken on a trip to Nicaragua several months ago. Sometimes people ask me how I name some of my images. Typically, it's a simple association. I just look at the image and write down the first thing that comes to mind. In this case, a fire breathing dragon.

The Blue Bubble: I've did a couple trips down to Mainland Mexico during the summer and was fortunate to time it pretty well with conditions. While it's not terribly important where this wave is, I will say that it did this for close to 300 yards. Viva la search!

The Big Bang: Now, I'm no physicist, but I do happen to watch a lot of The Science Channel. This image, shot at Black's Beach, looked so much like some kind of molecular explosion in space that I had no choice but to borrow from Fred Hoyle's nomenclature.

Stranded: This image was shot at a somewhat unnamed stretch of coast near Ventura, California. It was a clear Fall day and the Los Padres National Forest can be seen in the background.

Silver Rush: Not quite as famous as the gold rush of 1849, this image was shot in Nicaragua and is actually the first black and white image I have put in my gallery.

Sea Glass: This image was shot at Black's Beach while free diving with my girlfriend one day. The water was so clear this day it was like looking through a fish tank from the inside out. On a side note, sea glass is actually one of the only valuable items created from the actions of the environment on man-made litter.

Sapphire Spinner: Another image of Black's Beach on small clean day with some slow shutter experimentation.

GoldenEye: This image was shot in Nicaragua just moments before the sun set over the mountains.

Mundaka: I spent approximately six hours in Mundaka while on a three week trip in Europe during the 2006 WCT tour. The waves were not that good but I did manage to take a few interesting images while I was there.

Meet 'n' Greet: This is an interesting image I shot while working in Hawaii back in 2004. Shot from a bit of a elevated angle I was somehow able to capture a wave at Pipeline and Off The Wall breaking at the same time.

Low Tide: This image was shot during a walk around Tavarua one evening. I was working on the island for a week in 2008 and after a long day of shooting surfers I would make a habit of walking around the small island looking for interesting things to shoot. The sand formation at low tide caught my eye right away.

Kiwi: I spent almost three weeks on the east coast of the north island of New Zealand a couple years ago. It was hard to come home from that trip because New Zealand has everything I love. Amazing surf, world class trout fishing , lush golf courses and beautiful scenery like this. Traveling here is definitely habit forming.

Kia: This is an image of one of my most favorite places in the world. Kia is a small island in the furthest reaches of Fiji. There is not much here that would excite the average Westerner. There is no television, no shopping mall, no 7-11, no pressure whatsoever. What it does offer is very simple. The kind hearted hospitality Fijians are known for, drinking kava under giant shady trees, amazing fishing by hand line and astounding beauty in every direction.

Kaena Point: Kaena Point, named after a Hawaiian chief, is the most western point on Oahu. I was staying in Pupukea during the winter of 2005 when I found a nice vantage point to capture this image of the point from above Waimea Bay.

Kaena Mountainside: I was in Oahu one season trying my best to shoot surf photography. Only problem was that the waves an wind decided not to cooperate for over two weeks during my time there. This lent for some exploration. I spent an afternoon out on Kaena Point trying to find an image. After several hours shooting water crashing on rocks I shot this photo of the mountainside. I think I liked it best because I'd never seen vegetative colors like this in Hawaii until that point.

Jelly Beans: I spent a few weeks in Bali last August with my girlfriend. Typically, Bali is a place I go to work. However, this was actually a vacation so I was free to shoot exactly what I wanted. This image was shot during a day we were snorkeling in Amed. This is a side of Bali that I'd never seen before and look forward to exploring more in the future.

Island Violet: This image was also taken during the same trip to Hawaii when the waves and weather just weren't that great. The great thing about it was that I was able to take the time to shoot non-surf related material like this. This photo was shot near the Turtle Bay Hilton.

Pacific Solitude: Nukubati, Fiji. I went there for a surf editorial trip but the waves never made it. So, we had to stare at these sunsets every night instead. Don't worry. I'm gonna be ok.

The Del: Thomas Edison, Charlie Chaplin, Babe Ruth, Marilyn Monroe. What do they all have in common? They have been guests at the Hotel Del Coronado. What else do they have in common? Well, they probably never got to see the hotel through the eye of a barreling wave as you are now.

Flight Formation: This is an image of Black's Beach on a very fun and uncrowded day. Well, save for the pelicans running training ops.

Engulfed: I shot this image the day after Hurricane Gustav made it's way through the Gulf of Mexico back in 2008. I was staying in a small beach front hotel in Panama City Beach, Florida as the hurricane made it's way towards landfall. The night before I couldn't stop watching that spinning purple blog on the Weather Channel make it's way towards me. I was sure that the roof of my hotel was going to rip off in the middle of the night, sending me up into the sky via twister. Luckily, it headed towards Texas causing minimal damage to the roof of my hotel room.

Ehukai Evening: This image was shot several years on Oahu's North Shore. Surfer magazine ran it a while later in a Hawaii issue. I think I was at Rocky Point shooting some surf action when I turned the 840mm of lens to the left and shot this image just before dark.

Chinaman's Hat: Due to it's unique conical shape, Mokolii is nicknamed Chinaman's Hat. Every time I come to Oahu I try to spend a couple hours on the windward side of the island looking for interesting things to photograph. I have probably shot this island from a ten different angle during different trips to Oahu. This on is my current favorite.

El Colorado: This photo was taken in Nicaragua at one of the most perfectly groomed beach breaks I've ever seen. I think the best part of this trip was that I wasn't there working. So I actually spent most of my time surfing. Seriously though, when the waves get this good, the camera has to come out for a ride.

Bula Bula: Translation...hello, welcome, bless you, good luck. Basically, Bula means very good things in Fijian. I though it fit this image of Tavarua well.

Shore Patrol: Come on in kids! The water is great! Yes, it's a shark in La Jolla, California. Will it hurt you. Well, if you are a worm, clam or shrimp you might want to watch out for this Leopard shark. His mouth is the size of a silver dollar. I spent a few days last year swimming around these curious creatures and making them my models.

The Aerialist added to Print Gallery

I have been spending a bit of time going through some older images trying to find ones that suit my prints website. When I came across this one I couldn't believe I had let it slip through the cracks for so long. This image of Oceanside, California was taken in October of 2007 during one of the largest and most devastating wildfires in Southern California's recent history. Strong Fall Santa Ana winds coupled with a steady round of South swell made for a very eerie combination as smoke from the fires blew out to sea. I shot several images that I am proud of on this day, but this one really stood out for the most obvious reason. The Aerialist was putting on a show. Malibu Aerial Image added to Print Gallery

Waterman's Ball Calendar

Last month I had the great honor of contributing a few of my images to be used in the 20th annual Waterman's Ball Calendar. The ball, put on by SIMA, is an annual celebration to raise funds to protect and preserve our oceans. It is also a time for recognizing and honoring the surf industry's legends, leaders and personalities. In it's 20 years, the SIMA environmental fund has raised close to $5.0 million which has been distributed to organizations dedicated to protecting and preserving our oceans, beaches, surf breaks and waves. Bali and Beyond

After three years of law school and enduring the grueling California Bar exam it was time for my girlfriend, Monica, to go explore the world with me. We opted for a three week trip to Bali during the month of August. I've been to Bali a couple times before. However, I had apparently traveled during the low season. The last minute accommodation booking of our "high season" trip in August left us with one option, vagabond style. Due to lack of availability we ended up moving to a new location every couple days. Normally, this is not my ideal situation. In this case though, it allowed us to see and experience Bali through a much greater scope. The highlights were diving in Amed, riding elephants in Ubud, exploring Nusa Lembongan by scooter, visiting the Bali Aga village of Tenganan and lounging by the pool at Desa Seni. Here is a slideshow of some of my favorite images from the trip.

Mexico Run

Epic South Swell Hit's California...well sort of.

Well...Southern California had it's first REAL south swell of the summer last week. Wouldn't you know that after nearly two weeks of bluebird conditions, this Southern hemi brought along a grey California eddy front with it. Actually, this kind of weather has seemed to be rather typical of larger south swells in southern California for many that I remember. Yet, every year I seem to forget a few days before they actually hit. In any case, the swell did arrive as scheduled and I was able to find a few pockets of magic here and there. Luckily the sun decided to pop out down in San Diego for a few brief moments allowing for some color imagery. Surfermag.com and ESPN.com picked up a few images for their coverage and now I am back in the office working on images from a recent trip down south. The land where the souths really hit.

Southern Baja Getaway

My buddy Jason and I made a bit of a last minute decision to head down to Southern Baja last week. A couple solid looking southern hemisphere swells were lined up and we both had the urge to get out of San Diego, which had been plagued with May gray and June gloom for weeks. Although I never really travel without some decent camera gear when seeking waves, this trip was primarily one in which the board would take precedence over the camera. I was there to surf.

Just as forecasted, the straight south swell hit on Sunday lining up the East Cape with miles of right hand point breaks. One day in particular we were blessed with double overhead glassy rollers with really nobody out but us all day. I had been needing a day like that for longer than I can remember. Definitely a therapeutic day filled with many memorable rides and lots of sun.

I'm back in San Diego now. The waves are flat and the sky is gray. But, we all know that's gonna change really soon!

AnthonyGhigliaPrints.com Adds Three New Images

I am happy to announce that I have added three new images to my prints website. The first image, titled Green Almond, was captured while on a trip to Southern Nicaragua in July of 2008. The water color in this area of Central America is much more green than neighboring Costa Rica to the south. The sunset this evening offered beautiful color contrast to the lingering storm which would arrive that night. As the light filtered through the backs of these almond barrels, a kaleidoscopic display of green luminance filled their interior. Surfer Magazine ran this image as a double-page spread in their most recent photo annual.

En Fuego was taken on a strong Santa Ana day in Southern California's Imperial Beach. When I arrived in the morning the waves were rather small and the wind was gusting over twenty-five miles per hour. I decided to wait for the tide change in hopes the waves would show a bit more sign of life. About an hour later the swell really started filtering in, as did the wind. Now blowing at a steady thirty miles per hour with stronger gust, I shot a series of lineups literally two miles from the Tijuana bullring. A fire had broke out in the hills above the bullring and was spreading fast, as is common with this type of dry forceful wind. As the smoke from the fire filled the sky, I captured this final image of a perfectly groomed empty left hander marching to shore.

This last image, Untracked Faces, is of Cardiff Reef on a cold early winter morning. It was added at the request of someone who saw it in Surfer Magazine. If there are any images of mine which you would like me to add to the gallery please feel free to email me. I will gladly accommodate.

I have been traveling throughout Baja for a good part of the last 25 years. It is a place that I hold dear to my heart for many reasons. As an avid fisherman, the years of saltwater angling south of the border have brought me more exciting moments than I can count. As my love for surfing and photography grew, Baja provided me with a rich frontier of uncrowded waves and new discoveries within a days drive of my home in San Diego. One could say that Baja has been a "giving tree" of sorts. Each time I go down there I bring home wonderful experiences, new discoveries and images I can be proud of.

With all of this in mind, it is a pleasure to have contributed to the article written by Surfer Magazine Senior Editor, Baja aficionado and friend Kimball Taylor. In his piece, Kimball brings to light the current situation with Mexico's plan to construct a number of marinas along the Baja peninsula's Pacific coast. Unfortunately, these marinas will undoubtedly destroy some of Baja's most famous point breaks. Due to the current drug cartel struggle in Baja as well as the sunken economy, Mexico officials have put much of the construction on hold. Interesting enough, some of the abandoned marina construction sites have given way to nature, transforming them into what potentially could be new world class wave setups in the near future. It is a very interesting scenario and a good read.

Cardiff Reef in May 2009 Surfer Magazine

I just received my May '09 copy of Surfer Magazine in the mail a couple days ago. They decided to use an image of mine taken back in November at Cardiff Reef. I awoke very early this clear winter morning. The air was very dry and I knew the conditions were going to be good this morning as I made my way to Cardiff in the dark. The plan was to shoot with Machado this morning before he headed off to Hawaii for a couple months. As the sun rose behind me I shot a few images of the morning's first light and the first surfers hitting Cardiff Reef. A few minutes later I called Rob and we headed down to Seaside Reef to do some work. Here is the spread in Surfer this month and also some images of Rob from later that morning.

While the waves in California have been on the slow side I have been diligently working to launch two new websites. One of them is my portfolio site which is probably where you were before you got here. The other other is my new prints and stock website. The prints website will be updated with new images every month and will give surf and photography enthusiasts the opportunity to purchase signed and unsigned prints and canvas gallery wraps of my work. The stock website is designed for editorial publications and commercial clients looking to fulfill their surf, travel and lifestyle image needs. Unfortunately, I must keep my stock website reserved for editorial and commercial use. So, it is password protected.
